3:30 FRIDAY - Community Sustainability: Shediac Smart Energy Community
Brent Staeben, Director responsible for Smart Grid Atlantic
Brent is the Director responsible for Smart Grid Atlantic. Trained in economics and epidemiology, and with a career spent working across various executive positions in communications, marketing, and customer experience inside government and crown corporations, he’s spent the past four years pursuing opportunities to site innovative new smart energy projects in New Brunswick communities. This culminated in the announcement of $35.6M in federal funding in January 2019 for the $92M Smart Grid Atlantic initiative which he now leads.
Better known locally in Fredericton for his role as Music Programmer for the Harvest Music Festival, he’s an ECMA Winner, Tourism Industry Association of Canada national volunteer of the year, and most recently, was awarded the Order of New Brunswick.
Brent’s going to speak about the Shediac Smart Energy Community project and how these and similar projects are the sandboxes that New Brunswick can play in to learn about and prepare for the energy transition that is just beginning in Canada. The grid was engineered and built to send electricity to your home and business, but new technologies such as solar, batteries, and electric vehicles are disrupting that design and the 100-year-old business model that supports it. This disruption will create opportunities and consequences for just about everyone who uses electricity.
