UMNB has two types of committees that support the work of the Board of Directors: Standing Committees and Ad Hoc committees. UMNB’s committees are led by Regional Directors and elected officials from UMNB member communities, supported by UMNB staff. Municipal staff members can also serve as non-voting members to provide subject matter expertise. Each committee is responsible for identifying priorities and can make recommendations to the Board. The committee members and chair of each committee is appointed by the board, in accordance with UMNB’s by-laws.
As part of the 2026 Annual Conference, UMNB will be accepting expressions of interest from people who would like to serve on committees, with the goal of including a representative from each region. All current committee members are asked to confirm if they would be interested in serving for another two-year term, and another call for interest will be put forward in 2028. September 2026 – Call for Expressions of Interest
- Request for current committee members to confirm if they are interested in continuing.
October 2026 – Information about each committee provided during the Annual Conference.
- Deadline for Expression of Interest applications is Friday, October 16th, 2026.
November 2026 – Governance Committee makes recommendations to the Board
- UMNB Board appoints new members Nov. 27-28.
December 2026 – New members notified
January 2027 – New terms begin

Standing Committees support the work of the Board and include the Executive Committee, Finance Committee, Governance & Resolutions Committee (includes the Nominations Committee), the Urban Municipal Caucus. Expressions of interest will be open for:

Note that the Executive Committee and UMC appointments are automatic as per UMNB’s by-laws.
- Ad Hoc Committees (subject to change)
From time to time the Board may establish Committees) to assist in carrying out its responsibilities. Each committee has a Terms of Reference that outlines the composition and mandate, and the Board has assigned member resolutions to each committee for prioritization. Committees permit deeper examination and analysis of issues. Committee members may bring an additional level of expertise to the issues at hand.

Climate
Description: The Climate Committee supports municipalities in addressing climate change through mitigation and adaptation strategies. It focuses on resilience, sustainability initiatives, and sharing best practices to help communities reduce emissions and prepare for environmental impacts.
Conference
Description: The Conference Committee plans and delivers UMNB’s annual conference and related events. It oversees programming, speaker selection, and member engagement to ensure valuable learning, networking, and collaboration opportunities.
Executive
Description: The Executive Committee provides strategic leadership and oversight for UMNB between Board meetings. It supports decision-making, ensures alignment with organizational priorities, and addresses emerging issues impacting members.
Finance
Description: The Finance Committee oversees UMNB’s financial health, including budgeting, reporting, and fiscal planning. It ensures transparency, accountability, and responsible stewardship of organizational resources.
Fiscal and Local Government Advisory
Description: The Fiscal and Local Governance Advisory Committee examines issues related to municipal funding, taxation, and governance structures. It provides guidance and recommendations to strengthen the financial sustainability and effectiveness of local governments.
Governance
Description: The Governance Committee reviews and develops policies, bylaws, and governance practices for UMNB. It ensures the organization operates effectively, transparently, and in alignment with best practices.
Health
Description: The Health Committee addresses issues at the intersection of municipal governance and community well-being. It supports advocacy and collaboration on public health, and social services.
Infrastructure
Description: The Infrastructure Committee focuses on municipal infrastructure priorities, including funding, asset management, and long-term planning. It supports members in advocating for support in maintaining and improving essential community assets.
Public Safety
Description: The Public Safety committee assists the board in effectively identifying and prioritizing shared municipal concerns regarding policing and justice, fire services, community safety, and management of emergencies.
Urban Municipal Caucus (UMC)
Description: The Urban Municipal Caucus (UMC) provides a forum for larger municipalities to discuss shared challenges and priorities. It supports advocacy and collaboration on issues unique to urban communities.
