Job Posting: Indigenous Relations Coordinator
The Union of the Municipalities of New Brunswick (UMNB) is a bilingual association of sixty local governments of all sizes, representing over eighty two percent of New Brunswick’s population. We are a member-driven organization that is the voice and authority of municipalities in New Brunswick; our mission is to engage and collaborate with all New Brunswick municipalities to build vibrant and sustainable communities via advocacy and the provision of valuable services for members.
UMNB is seeking a dynamic Indigenous Relations Coordinator to assist in the implementation of a projected funded through the Federation of Canadian Municipalities Local Leadership for Climate Adaptation (LLCA). The project aims to advance climate adaptation within municipalities through respectful engagement with Indigenous Communities.
The Indigenous Relations Coordinator would report directly to the Executive Director and work in tandem with the Policy and Research Officer and the External Relations Manager. The Indigenous Relations Coordinator must have exemplary stakeholder engagement and management skills, as well as capacity to build relationships.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead the consultation and engagement with Indigenous communities and partners on climate vulnerabilities
- Create a network of practice for communities to share their progress, process, plans, and create a guide to respectful engagement etc.
- Support municipal elected officials and staff to engage in a process of learning and relationship building with neighbouring Indigenous communities on the topic of climate change.
- Review municipal plans, by-laws, governance documents, asset management plans, climate adaptation plans and other relevant information to ensure that Indigenous perspectives are valued and incorporated appropriately and to identify opportunities for Indigenous consultation and engagement.
- Lead the creation of a 6-workshop training module with Indigenous partners and local governments to build capacity at a municipal level.
- Support municipal staff to bring relevant feedback and changes to council for consideration.
- Finalize the case studies with municipal governments into a final written report to share with relevant stakeholders, provincial departments, and the Federation of Canadian Municipalities.
Competencies:
- Strong attention to detail and ability to maintain excellent document management and file organization.
- Strong collaborator and superior relationship building, ability to communicate on sensitive topics effectively
- Ability to translate complex concepts and issues into communication materials for general public and other stakeholders
- Critical and creative thinking skills, sound judgement
- Preference will be provided to someone who has experience working with either local governments and Indigenous communities
- Knowledge of climate change risks and adaptation planning is considered an asset
- Knowledge of First Nations history, communities, culture and social concerns is an asset. Preference will be given to qualified candidates of Indigenous descent
- Knowledge of English, French, Mi’kmaw or Wolastoqey is considered an asset.
Qualifications:
- A university degree in sociology, political science, planning, engineering or another similar field. An equivalent combination of lived experience and working within Indigenous communities would be considered.
- 3-5 years’ experience
