Washington D.C. – UMNB President and Mayor of Grand Bay-Westfield, Brittany Merrifield, participated today in a Mayors Trade Summit organized by the U.S. Conference of Mayors with representatives from Mexico, the United States, and Canada.
“Our members, from Edmundston to Tantramar and everywhere in between, are deeply concerned about the impacts that this trade war will have on our economy,” said President Merrifield. “Tariffs will negatively impact businesses, families, and our communities greatly. This summit was an opportunity for Team Canada to unite with our Mexican and American friends to discuss common challenges and urge our respective governments to support our shared citizens in these challenging times.”
Mayor Merrifield joined a delegation of the Federation of Canadian Municipalities and over 30 mayors from the three countries to present a united front on how local governments can work together with respective governments to encourage fair trade practices. New Brunswick’s economic sectors such as energy, lumber, fisheries, and manufacturing are heavily dependent on trade with the United States.
“The trade war will impact the things that our citizens rely on every day, especially at a time when the cost of living is challenging. As neighbours, we must work together to build strong and prosperous communities on all sides of the border. Fair trade that supports our communities must be the priority to ensure our citizens are protected in these trying times” concluded Merrifield.
