Fredericton, NB The Union of Municipalities of New Brunswick (UMNB) is proud to announce the recipients of this year’s prestigious awards, celebrating individuals who have made significant contributions to their communities and the province. Over 325 members and guests gathered on October 5, 2024, to celebrate UMNB’s 30th anniversary and honour these exceptional leaders at the Annual Awards Banquet.

The Raymond Murphy Memorial Award commemorates the legacy of the former UMNB president and executive director, who was deeply committed to community service in Rexton, NB and across the province. Established in 2017, this award recognizes a municipal member —elected or non-elected—who has demonstrated outstanding dedication to their community. The 2024 Raymond Murphy Memorial Award was presented to John Jarvie, Town Manager of Rothesay, for his remarkable 50-year career in public service spanning New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, and Alberta. His humility and dedication to local government have left a lasting impact, creating positive change across the Town of Rothesay and on behalf of municipalities across the province.

The Arthur Slipp Municipal Leader of the Year Award, named in recognition  of former Woodstock Mayor and UMNB President Arthur Slipp. This award celebrates a municipal official who has shown exceptional leadership and commitment to effecting meaningful change in their community. This year’s recipient, Mayor Peter Saunders of the Community of Three Rivers, was recognized for his public service, including his work with the Petitcodiac fire department and housing initiatives. His visionary leadership has been pivotal in guiding his community through challenges, fostering progress, and achieving lasting success.

UMNB’s highest honor, the Louise Breau Memorial Award, recognizes the unparalleled dedication and long-term commitment to municipalities in New Brunswick. Named in memory of the late Mayor Louise Breau of Millville, who was known for her dynamic and caring approach to community service. The 2024 award was presented to Councillor Robert B. Simpson of Nackawic-Millville. Councillor Simpson is the first two-time  recipient having first received this award in 1999. Councillor Simpson has been a steadfast advocate for his community since its formation, demonstrating integrity, honesty, and passion in his role. His commitment to serving the residents is well-known and appreciated by those who have had the pleasure of working with him. Councillor Simpson was nominated for his service and helping lead the transition and unity of the new municipality of Nackawic-Millville.

UMNB extends heartfelt congratulations to all award recipients for their exceptional achievements and unwavering commitment to public service. These individuals embody the spirit of municipal leadership and inspire others to continue making a difference in their communities.

UMNB President Brittany Merrifield, Mayor of Grand Bay-Westfield, expressed her gratitude: “We want to congratulate Mr. Jarvie, Mayor Saunders, and Councillor Simpson for all the work they have accomplished for their communities and beyond.  You all lead your communities with vision and integrity and are true examples of what it means to be champions of community.”
